The Czech Republic was the birthplace to many famous people like writer Franz Kafka, director Milos Forman, and hockey player Jaromír Jágr. One day Hamilton Rugby Football Club player and Czech national Eliška Mrkvičková will be added to that list. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Eliška is the school’s only exchange student. She comes to the school from the rugby club Sparta Praha in Prague, Czech Republic. This is her second year in rugby. She plays as a forward in the second row. Her interest in the sport came from her father who played for the Czech national team.
Eliška is a lot like her American teammates. She likes sushi, Hannah Montana, and the Fast & the Furious movies. She has a dog named “Eda” (which is the Czech equivalent to “Ed”), but she doesn’t have any brothers or sisters. She can often be seen in the hallways after school talking with her parents before they head to bed, as the Czech Republic is seven hours ahead of Milwaukee.
She is staying with HRFC player Norah Miller and is still trying to settle in by getting used to her new school and meeting new friends. She has struggled to acclimate to the school lunch program, which she equates to “fast food,” missing the more home cooked options in the Czech Republic like soup, rice, and meat. She hates how much ice Americans put in drinks, but she has fallen in love with fried cheese curds. Besides her family, the things she misses most about home is hanging out with friends, going out on Friday nights, and having sleepovers.
She is excited about playing in her first game with the club, as she tentatively explained, “hopefully I will be kinda good.”
Eliška will be with the team for the fall and spring season, hoping to finish her career with the team at the Lakefront 7s tournament in June.

Česká republika byla rodištěm mnoha slavných osobností, jako je spisovatel Franz Kafka, režisér Miloš Forman a hokejista Jaromír Jágr. Jednoho dne hráčka ragbyového klubu Hamilton, češka Eliška Mrkvičková bude přidána na tento list. Kvůli pandemii COVID-19 je Eliška jedinou výměnnou studentkou školy. Do školy přichází z ragbyového klubu Sparta Praha v Praze. Toto je její druhý rok v ragby. Hraje jako útočník ve druhé řadě. O sport se zajímala od jejího taťky, který hrál za český národní tým.
Eliška je hodně podobná jejím americkým spoluhráčkám. Má ráda sushi, Hannah Montana a filmy Rychle a zběsile. Má psa jménem „Eda“, ale nemá žádné sourozence. Po škole ji lze často vidět na chodbách, jak si povídá s rodiči, než jdou spát, protože Česká republika je o 7 hodin napřed, než Milwaukee.
Bydlí u hráčky HRFC Norah Miller a stále se snaží usadit, zvyknout si na svou novou školu a potkávat se s novými přáteli. Snažila se aklimatizovat na školní obědový program, který přirovnává k „rychlému občerstvení“, postrádá možnosti domácky připraveného jídla v České republice, jako je polévka, rýže a maso. Nemá ráda kolik ledu dávají Američané do nápojů, ale zamilovala si cheese curds. Kromě rodiny, věci které jí z domova chybí je čas strávený s přáteli, chození v pátek večer ven a přespávání u kamarádů.
Těší se na svůj první zápas s klubem, jak předběžně vysvětlila: „Doufám, že budu celkem dobrá.“
Eliška bude s týmem na podzimní a jarní sezónu a doufá, že dokončí svou kariéru s týmem na červnovém turnaji Lakefront 7s.
